FAQ
The best thing you can do before hiring a pet care provider is to ask questions and research until you find the provider you feel will give your pets the care they deserve and makes you feel the most comfortable. Below are questions that we are frequently asked. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to call or send us a message. We look forward to meeting you and your pet!
Wow! I’m impressed! How do I get started with The Pet Nanny?
Contact us! Call the office at 804-413-6269, email thepetnanny14@gmail.com or send a message via this website on the form at the bottom of this page. Let’s discuss which services you need and schedule a complimentary meet and greet. We will return all calls and emails within 24 hours, Monday – Saturday. You will also need to create a client profile and pet profiles with our industry-leading scheduling software, Time To Pet. We are happy to send you your welcome link so you can get scheduled right away.
How quickly can I book my first appointment?
Right away! As soon as your portal is activated and you’ve had your meet & greet, you can begin scheduling services. Need dog walking or cat sitting the same day as your initial meeting? No problem. We’ll get it scheduled.
What is a pet sitter?
A pet sitter is a person that comes into your home to provide are for your pets when you can’t be there or are unable. Dog walking is also a form of pet sitting since it involves coming to the pet’s home to provide exercise and companionship. Caring for pets in the clients’ homes is what separates pet sitters from boarders or doggie daycares. All of The Pet Nanny staff is background checked and is certified in Pet CPR/First Aid.
What kind pets do you care for?
We care for all domestic pets, including dogs, cats, birds, fish, guinea pigs, rabbits, mice and reptiles. We also provide horse and farm visits. Don’t see your pet listed? Reach out! We will add it to our list!
Where is your boarding facility?
We are not a boarding facility. We are an in-home professional pet sitting company, which means we take care of your pets in the comfort of their own home. Less stress for all!
I had a bad experience with my last pet sitter, will The Pet Nanny provide better service?
We have an extensive application process, including a background check, to ensure we hire the best pet sitters, provide industry-leading scheduling software, and provide the best possible care for your pets. The majority of our business comes from word-of-mouth referrals. What does that mean? It means we are providing the best care possible with integrity. Our motto is Reliable·Trustworthy·Devoted.
How do you access my house?
The Pet Nanny will keep a key on file. The key will be secure in a lock box while not in use. This eliminates the need to make several trips to get the key and return the key. If you ever have an emergency, we can get in to care for your pet.
How many visits per day do I need for my pet?
That is up to you! We have suggestions for you and can share what most clients choose.
- For inside dogs, we suggest 2-5 visits per day, depending on your schedule. Most people request three visits each day. It depends on your pet’s needs and your comfort level.
- Outside pets require a minimum of one (1) visit a day.
- Crated and confined dogs require a minimum of three (3) visits a day.
- For cats, we do a minimum of one (1) visit, every-other-day.
Why is your service better than an independent pet sitter?
Most independent pet sitters do not offer the reliability, availability, or security you get when hiring a professional pet sitting company. The Pet Nanny is licensed, bonded and insured. We are Pet CPR/First Aid trained and continue our education through webinars and classes. You are getting a professional company, excellent customer service and a team of experienced sitters.
Can you administer medications?
Yes. We can administer oral medications, creams and ointments. We do charge a fee for Sub-q fluids and insulin injections. In addition, the whole team is Pet CPR/First Aid Certified.
Will the same pet sitter come to my home for all visits?
Our goal is to have a primary sitter for each client. It’s important for the sitter to develop a relationship with our clients as well as a bond with their pets. However, if there is an emergency or your primary sitter is booked, we will send a backup sitter in their place. We are always more than happy to set up another Free Meet & Greet Visit with the backup sitter.
What is the importance of midday dog walks?
A well-exercised dog is a happy dog and is, therefore, less likely to display destructive behavior in your home. Also, providing a stimulating break during the day can help alleviate separation anxiety and provide a much needed potty break. If you are gone most of the day, that means your pet is home all alone, and a mid-day walk provides that much-needed attention when you are away.
My dog doesn’t walk well on a leash, can you leash train him?
We are happy to partner with you in providing the same routine your pet is accustomed to. We understand the importance of consistency. We have found that the majority of dogs that are learning to walk properly on a leash, do best when on a consistent walking schedule of at least three days a week. We’re happy to customize your dog care to their individual needs. You can share this information with us a few ways: by updating your pet profile on the portal, showing / telling us at your initial meet & greet, or by uploading training documentation to your account. Please note: our dog sitters only use positive reinforcement methods (food, treat, distraction, clicker, crate training, etc.)
What time of day will you walk my dog?
You will get to choose a time block when you schedule. As a team, we are able to provide service 365/24/7.
Are you bonded and insured?
Absolutely! The Pet Nanny LLC is bonded and insured through Business Insurers of the Carolinas.
Do you accommodate last-minute requests?
Our goal is to accommodate all requests and we have a great track record of providing service for last minute requests. However, we cannot guarantee coverage for last minute requests. We ask that you call the office for last minute or same day requests. We will do all we can to make it happen! There is a $15 fee added for requests made within 24 hours of the requested service. The fee compensates the sitter for extra mileage and the schedule change.
Do you charge holiday fees?
An additional holiday charge of $5 will apply for all visits made on the following holidays:
- New Years Eve
- New Years Day
- Easter
- Memorial Day
- July 4
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas Eve
- Christmas Day
Can I book appointments or make schedule changes directly with the pet sitter?
No. All appointments and schedule changes MUST be made by logging into our client portal. Additionally, if you do not make reservations through the office, then neither you nor the pet sitter will have the protection of our liability insurance and no guarantee the visit will be scheduled.
How will I know if my sitter showed up?
We only hire reliable, trustworthy and devoted professional pet sitters. To help our sitters do their job properly, we use industry-leading scheduling software that notifies you when your sitter has arrived; shows visit start and end times; tracks walks and transportation services with GPS. Once the visit is completed the sitter sends an update including photos to an activity feed in the portal for you to review.
Should I tip my sitter?
Treat our service as you would any other service. Pet sitters are thrilled to receive monetary appreciation for a superior effort. Some clients tip only at Christmas, some a few dollars each visit, some give gifts or just do nice things for the pet sitter. Nothing is ever expected, but it is certainly appreciated.
How am I billed?
The Pet Nanny accepts all major credit cards, debit cards and ACH. Invoices are due on the first day of service; however, you may choose to make your payment anytime prior using the portal or app. If we have not received payment by the first day of service, we will automatically charge your card on file. If a client requests to extend service, they guarantee payment at the same rate for all services at the time of requested change.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations within 24 hours of the service will be paid in full and credited to future visits only, no refunds. Cancellation of visits NOT on a holiday will be credited to future services only; no refunds. Cancellation of visits ON a holiday will be forfeited; No credits or Refunds will be given. Generally, we follow the protocol above for all cancellations except in extreme circumstances. That said, here are a few examples of exceptions in which case we’ll waive the cancellation fee:
- If it is dangerous for our sitter to get to your home due to weather, and alternate pet care arrangements can be made.
- If you cancel because of a legitimate weather incident which renders your workplace closed.
- If you cancel, preemptively, by 3PM the day before the scheduled walk.
Since late cancellations impact our pet sitter’s earnings, the more consistent their workload, the less turn-over we see in staffing. If our pet sitters can get to your home safely, even in tricky weather, we’d love to keep you on the schedule. Our office often sends out notices during weather emergencies, so keep an eye on your email. If you have an extenuating circumstance, don’t hesitate to reach out!
What if there is an emergency and my pet requires medical attention?
Your pet will be taken to the closest vet or Emergency Care Hospital. Our portal also has a required field to let us know the max spend for emergency care and permission for The Pet Nanny to take your pet to be treated.
What types of pets do you care for?
Hot Diggity! pet sitters love all pets! We have experience caring for dogs, cats, birds, chickens, fish, rabbits, goats, llamas, hamsters, rats, pigs, horses, ferrets, reptiles and many other species. Whether its dog sitting, cat sitting, or farm sitting, we’re here for you. So long as your pets do not pose a danger to our pet sitter, and your care schedule abides by our Standards of Care, we’d love to meet them.
I work for a company that employs a ton of pet owners. Do you ever partner with businesses to offer a company-wide discount or extra perks?
Yes! Absolutely. Let’s talk!
Can you visit my pet while they are at a friend’s house? Can you visit my pet while they are being boarded for a little one-on-one time?
Sure can!
Are you on social media? I’d love to see adorable pet pics!
We sure are! Keep up with The Pet Nanny LLC on Facebook and Instagram to see adorable pet pictures, event announcements, featured pet sitters, contests, giveaways, and more
Who can view my profile or see my messages in the Portal? Can I leave a message for a specific pet sitter?
Great questions! Our portal is designed to limit access by any unnecessary parties. The only people who can see your information are: Our administrative / management staff and the pet sitters who are (or have been) scheduled for services in your home. For most households the number of pet sitters who can view your information is limited to 3-5. For transparency reasons, any message left in the conversation thread is viewable by everyone who has access to your account. This ensures all pet sitters are up to date with changes in routine and all managers which helps us to provide the best possible care for your pet by being up to speed on any updates or changes. When a pet sitter leaves The Pet Nanny for any reason, access to the portal is immediately deactivated and they no longer have access to any information or history, whatsoever. For clients with security concerns, we can limit access even further—just let us know and we’ll work together to help you feel secure.
How do you use my personal data? Is my credit card information secure?
The Pet Nanny values privacy and security; we understand how essential this is in a trust-based industry like ours. To that end, we never share personal data with any outside companies or sell information to any third party companies. Your contact information will only be used by The Pet Nanny directly and is encrypted without access by any of The Pet Nanny LLC staff. Aside from the last 4 digits of your card number, your credit card information is not viewable or accessible to us in any way once it’s stored in our system.
